Shardik by Richard Adams

1976. Adams books explore the way we interact as humans through fictional animal tales. The ending is hokey, but the rest of the text is most insightful.

Shardik is a huge bear. One man believes Shardik to be a god, and that he has special powers of communication with the bear. He leads his people based on this belief. Lots of food for thought.
