Watership Down
by Richard Adams
1972. This work is something more than a children's story and borders on great liturature. The characters may be rabbits, but we're all in there somewhere. One rabbit, Hazel, leads a group from the overcrowded warren to find a place for them to build a new home. On the way they must deal with all the struggles of life, death, society and perspective.
The animated movie made of this story is well worth seeing, with interesting artistic techniques and a good attempt to include some of the meaning of the story as well as the basic plot.
