1700-1800
3/00 George Washington Father of Freedom
by Stewart Graff. This is a book for young readers, 57 pages with line drawings. A basic introduction to the life of Washington.1800- 1900
autobiography by Irving Bacheller. This book was one of the ten best sellers in 1900 and 1901. Although it is titled with the name of the man who greatly influenced his life, it is the life story of Bacheller. He was a journalist who began his career under Horace Greeley and started the first newspaper syndicate in the United States. It is a story of pioneer values transitioning through the Civil War (with a first hand account of the Battle of Bull Run, in which Bacheller was injured), into the metropolitan world.
autobiography by Amanda Smith. You won't find this book easily, but this is one woman who refused to fit the mold. She preached around the world in the late 1800's, overcoming such obstacles as poverty, abuse, prejudice against her African-American heritage, and her gender. Some parts of her book are tedious, but the story of her life was so fascinating I kept reading anyway. 1900-2000
autobiography by Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965). What happens to a person who really lives by what they believe.
by Frank L. Houghton. Amy might be considered the Mother Theresa of the early 1900's.
autobiography by Annie Dillard. In her incredible, observant style she will cause you to remember how the world looked to you as a child.
by Kenneth L. Wilson. The work of Lillian Dickson, missionary to the people of Taiwan. This is one incredible woman!
