North Country Trail in New York- High Peaks

OOPS! I wanted to see the New York links.

[hipeaks]

In Pre-Cambrian times the High Peaks rose from the surrounding landscape as a bubble of molten bedrock. They are some of the oldest mountains in the world, and to my mind, some of the most appealing. Seen here from the north, Marcy is on the left, Algonquin dominates the center and the MacIntyre range is on the right.

[balsam fir] [leanto]

The scent of balsam on the breeze, and these characteristic lean-tos add to the appeal of hiking in the Adirondacks. We also saw a bear ; check this site for info on safety in bruin country. Or see this slide show for info specific to black bears.

[Marcy]

The Adirondacks means layers of blue stretching to every horizon. Top of Mt. Marcy- 5344 ft. -the highest point in NY. Chips really did get to be top dog for a day!

[LWJ sign] [river]
I'll admit that we were wet a lot of the time we were there, whether (or is that "weather") from above or below. Minnesota Sea Grant has an excellent article on survival in cold water and hypothermia prevention.

[stove]

But a hot meal at day's end usually cheered everyone.

[spider web]

It was foggy and surreal the day we topped Lower Wolf Jaw, directing our attention to the near-at-hand rather than to sweeping views.

[climbing] [Wallface]

Wallface is the second highest sheer cliff in the East, 900 feet high. Indian Pass leads the determined hiker to a trail beside the face.
