Geology

The MI Department of Environmental Quality has provided a fairly brief and readable historical geology of the state. It's one of the links from this site which also has info about Petoskey Stone, Isle Royale Greenstone, copper, iron, and the oldest macrofossil in the world.

Here's an interesting surface temperature map of Lake Superior in July 1988.

It's not exactly geology, but northern Michigan might offer you a night of nature's light show, the northern lights. See some pix, and learn about them on The Aurora Page .

Personal Pages of folks using the trail

Chuck has backpacked lots of places. Here he shares a Pictured Rocks trip.

Like to do it in the winter? Big M Ski Lodge is only a couple of miles from the NCT, with over 30km of Nordic cross-country ski trails.

Everybody loves the Porkies! Chuck also hiked them. Chuck's Backpacking Bonanza trip. You should take time to back up to his home page and check out all his helpful info.

Greg has been to the Porkies too.

Paul Haan has created a page called Michigan Benchmark with a goal to serve as a resource for Great Lakes hiking opportunities. He's well on his way, and although the page is technically "under construction" there's lots of good info posted already.
