E-Mail For Beginners
Internet 103

An E-Mail program will connect with T-One.Net and allow you to send and receive e-mail. There are several e-mail programs on the market, but the three most popular are Microsoft Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, and Eudora. E-Mail programs like your browser have a menu bar at the top.

So Many Buttons, So Little Time

The Inbox is where your new messages are initially send when you check your mail on the server.

The address book is where you can keep the e-mail addresses of individuals you will be sending e-mail to. This way you won't need to try to remember the 100's of people and e-mail addresses you'll be corresponding with.

If someone sends you an e-mail you can respond to their e-mail by clicking on the reply button. This saves you the time of finding their e-mail address and normally includes a copy of their message with yours.

If you receive an e-mail from Aunt Tilly and would like to send it to cousin Jed you can click on the forward button and then enter Jed's e-mail address in the To: field. This will send him the entire message you received from Aunt Tilly.

Reply to all will send a reply to anyone that received the message. Be careful with this one as not everyone that may have received the original message will appreciate your reply. Normally it is best to use reply instead of reply to all.

If after reading a message you wish to get rid of it you can click on the Delete button. This will send the message into either the Deleted folder or into the Trash depending on your e-mail program. Both are the same only the names have been changed.

The Print button does exactly that. If you receive a great recipe for chocolate spaghetti from Susie and decide to try it for dinner you can click on the Print button to send the message to your printer.

Sending an E-Mail

1. First open your E-Mail program ( for example, Netscape Messenger, Outlook Express, or Eudora), and click the icon for a new message.

A new window looking something like this will open:

2. TO:
This section is much like the outside of an envelope. You need to tell your e-mail program who to send the message to.

In the To: section type in the address of the person you'd like to send E-Mail to. An e-mail address would look something like help@t-one.net . Be extremely careful when typing the e-mail address as most undelivered e-mail is becausse someone mistyped the e-mail address. Even though your mail delivery person might realize Jon Smith is the same as John Smith, computers will not. E-mail address are also very often case sensitive. Make sure if your friends says their e-mail address is weBbroWser@t-one.net that you type it EXACTLY as they sent it to you using upper and lower case letters. To send an e-mail message to more than one person you can do so by putting a semi-colon ( ; ) between the names.

CC:
This allows you to send a carbon copy of your E-Mail to another recipient. Simply place the recipient's E-Mail address in the CC: box, as in the To: field. A copy of the E-Mail will be sent to that person. Sometimes you will see a BCC: field. Entering someone's e-mail address in the BCC field will send the e-mail to them, but the person in the TO: field won't know that you also sent it to the other person. BCC stands for blind carbon copy.

3. SUBJECT:
Typing in a Subject isn't required, but it much easier for someone to check their mail if you put in a subject.

4. E-MAIL MESSAGE: This is where you type the body of your message. The text in your message will scroll up if you get to the bottom of the window.

5. SEND:
After addressing your mail and writing the message you must click on the send button. As with the postal mail, it won't be sent out until you drop it in the mail box. Clicking on send is like putting the letter in the mail box.

There. You've sent an e-mail message. Now lets move on to bigger and better things.

E-Mail Attachments

You just got a digital camera, or scanner for your birthday and now you want to send a friend or relative a photo. We do this with an e-mail attachment.

To send an E-Mail attachment:

  1. Open and complete the E-Mail message as described above.
  2. Click the Attach button or papgerclip icon.
  3. This will open a new window that shows files on your computer. Browse through your folders and files to find the file you would like to attach to your message. If you're not sure how to browse through your files check your Windows help files by clicking an empty area on your desktop and pressing F1. You can then search through the Windows help.

  4. After clicking on the file you want to attach to the e-mail it will appear in the "file name" box. Click the "Attach" button in the "Attach File" dialog box. The file's name will appear as a separate line in your E-Mail header, or as as an icon at the bottom of the message.

  5. Click the button to send your message.
