LYLE REENE'S PERSONAL mIRC SETUP NOTES The following set up notes presume that Version 4.52 has already been installed on your system, and you are ready to go online with it. While I have done my best to incorporate all items into this document that are used for a normal configuration, some items may have been missed. For this I apologize. Also, please keep in mind the these configuration settings are based on a lot of personal preferences. Use them as a starting point only to configure YOUR personal setup. I would appreciate feed back you may give if you find any major errors, and I would gladly accept any suggestions for improving the mIRC setup. Step 1 At Top Of Screen Choose, FILE SETUP IRC SERVERS tag: If you are going to use the "Undernet", highlight an Undernet server to get you started. As time goes on, you will find servers that you like, and servers that you don't like, and even add more servers to your list, but for now, just pick one. Any Undernet server will get you to the same place and they are all connected together. REAL NAME: Here you can either add your real name, or a cutesy saying. What ever is added here will show up when someone does a /whois on you, so it is up to you. Many IRC users insert a funny saying here in place of their real name; i.e., "Who Wants to Know" EMAIL ADDRESS: Here you will want to use your correct E-Mail Address. This information is for IRC server use only, and will not show up to another user. Many IRC servers will require a valid E-Mail Address here before they will let you on. NICK NAME: Here is your chance to be yourself. Choose a "Nick" carefully, for it will be by this name that everyone will get to know you. Try to choose a nick that fits your personality, profession, or hobby, but one that someone else will not be using (the whole system will only let ONE of a certain nick on at any given time. Nick Names cannot be registered either. Although it is an unwritten Policy of most IRC users not to use another's nick, there is nothing saying it wont happen. Remember "Your Nick, becomes who you are to the IRC world". ALTERNATE: Choose an Alternate Nick. Many times during lag, or netsplits, the server will think you are still there even when you aren't, and will keep your nick for a period of time. If you have an Alternate Nick in place, you will automatically be logged in under this alternate when you re-connect to a server if your normal Nick is in use (your ghost). Many IRC users use their normal Nick with a 2 after it, or they place a ^ (hat) either before or after their normal nick as an alternate. The choice is up to you of course. You want to be recognizable even with your alternate nick so people will know who you are during these periods. LOCAL INFO tag Leave both Local Host, and IP Address Blank. These items will be filled in for you when you log into an IRC server. Under "On connect, always get", X - IP Address Under "IP Method", X - Normal OPTIONS tag X Move server to top of list on connect X Retry connection 5 times Enter "60" seconds in the Time-out Delay box IDENT tag X Enable Ident Server In the space for User ID, you can list your name, a fake name, your nick, or anything else that will fit. This information will also be available to anyone doing a /whois on you. The default for SYSTEM should be "UNIX" The default for PORT should be "113" CLICK ON THE OK BUTTON to save Next, At Top OF Screen, Click FILE OPTIONS IRC SWITCHES tag Check the following Boxes X Reconnect on Disconnections X Actions Are in Purple X Highlight Own Messages X Iconofy Query Messages X Rejoin Channel When Kicked X Cancel Away on Keypress X Beep on Query Message X User Addresses X Quits in Channel X Joins/Parts in Channel X Modes in Channel Remove any other checks in this window NOTIFY LIST tag Check "Notify" at top, and add anyones Nick to the list that you wish to be notified of when they come on to IRC, leave IRC, etc. In addition, if you wish to do a whois on this person with the notification, place a check mark in this box when adding their nick. X Show Notifies in Active Window Remove any other Check marks from this window CONTROL tag You will probably not need anything in this window to start with. As you become an experience IRC user, you may want to add people who you wish to ignore to the ignore list, but that will come unfortunately in time. If you add name to this list, be sure and check the "Active Box" to make the window become effective. DOUBLE CLICK tag Under this tag, the following values should be the defaults. Typically, an avid "IRC Wave Nut" will create a separate directory (folder) on their hard disk for their wave files. If you have not already done so, go to program manager and create this directory now. It will save a lot of grief later. Once created, browse for the directory created where your waves files are located. It should look like C:\WAVES\ URL CATCHER tag X Send Only URL X Udit URL's Remove any other X (bullets) from this page. In the band at the bottom, insert the location and name of your Browser. i.e.; C:\Netscape\Netrscape.Exe If you dont know the location, you can of course click on the ? and browse for it. PERFORM tag CTCP Finger Reply - Enter what you would like someone to see if they did a "finger" on you. Usually one will have a saying like "You dont know me that well" or some other cutesy saying. CLICK OK to save At Top of Screen Again, Click TOOLS ALIASES The list of Aliases should be shown in the window, and the path to your Aliases file should be in the band below. If the bottom band doesn't look something like C:\MIRC452\ALIASES.INI (or what ever directory you have your mIRC files in). If it doesn't look like this, click your LOAD button and find this file, then click OK. Then do the same with the SAVE TO button. CLICK OK to save Back to the Top Of Screen, Click TOOLS POPUPS Although you will adding more popups later, this is a start. The important thing, like above, is that the location of your popup files are shown in the band at the bottom. If they are not, follow above procedure for Aliases, to specify the location of your POPUP.INI file. CLICK OK to save Top of Screen, Click TOOLS REMOTE X Events - X Listening In the large window, you can add script lines for many happenings within IRC. The most popular events and actions are "Auto Greets", "Auto Ping Responses", and "Auto Send" of wave files to others. These auto events will become second nature as time goes along, but the most popular event to automate is the sending of wave files to others. By having the following script in your Events file, others can come to you to automatically get a wave file if they do not have it. In this window, place the following line exactly as it appears here, replacing the word "yournick" with your chosen nickname, and replacing "c:\waves\" with the location of your wave files. 1:ON TEXT:!yournick*:*:/dcc send $nick c:\waves\ $+ $parm2 After you add this line to the file, you must do the following to save it. (1) Click OK at the upper right of the screen This will take you back to the mail IRC screen (2) Once again, at the top click TOOLS, REMOTE, and X - EVENTS. The script you added should be visible. (3) Click the LOAD button at the bottom. Choose the file REMOTE.INI from the list of files in your directory where your mIRC files are located. Click OK within this browse. Next click on the SAVE TO button at the bottom. Do this same procedure again, choosing the REMOTE.INI file, and clicking on the OK button in the browse. When finished with this step, the bar at the bottom of this events window should show the location of your events file such as; C:\MIRC452\REMOTE.INI Now once again click on the OK button in the upper right corner. Last Step, at top of screen Click DCC OPTIONS X Auto Get File and X Minimize X Show Chat Dialog DCC Sends = 20 Fileservers = 10 X Show Transfer Progress as Percent X Auto Resume Existing Files Under Notify with Beep, X Send X Get Remove any other X in this window. Under time-out in Seconds, set the following parameters; Chat/Dialog = 60 Send/Get Transfer = 1200 Fileserver = 120 At bottom of Screen, Place the location of your Wave Files in the bar provided by clicking on the ? to browse for it.. Again, assuming your wave files are located in a directory called waves on your C drive, it should look like this; C:\WAVES\ CLICK OK to save And there you have it. An IRC client program that is all ready for you to use and enjoy. When you are ready to connect, just hit the "CONNECT". If the server you have chosen is to busy, make another choice, and try it again until you get on. SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER!! The most popular servers at the present time are the Undernet.Org servers. This seems to be where the action is. At last listing, there were over 4800 Undernet Channels to pick from with all types of topics of discussion. All Channels on the Undernet start with a # Dont forget to make this part of your Channel name when you attempt to join. Different channels have different guidelines for operation. Some tolerate talk of all types, others do not. Find one that looks interesting to you and go for it. For a list of IRC commands, visit the mIRC home page where you downloaded your mIRC program from. A list of commands will help immensely when you first start using the IRC. Most important, ENJOY.
